Gillibrand Opens Up a Lead in New York

Shortly after Joseph DioGuardi won the Republican primary to take on New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, SurveyUSA put out a poll that showed him within a point of the senator.
Three weeks later, SurveyUSA finds Gillibrand in a much stronger position. The senator leads former Congressman Joe DioGuardi 54 percent to 35 percent. Much of the movement can be attributable to changes in the sample; the previous sample was 35 percent Republican, 44 percent Democrat, and 20 percent Independent, while the latest sample is 30 percent Republican, 49 percent Democrat and 20 percent Independent. For a reference, the 2006 electorate was 25 percent Republican, 27 percent Independent, and 47 percent Democrat.
