Norquist and Kennedy on the Ground Zero Mosque

This should go down as a pretty minor gripe but Dave Weigel's reporting undermines the headline of the latest post on his Slate blog (eponymously called "Weigel"): "How the Religious Right Made the Ground Zero Mosque Possible."
That's Grover Norquist's take but Norquist, as the chief spokesman for the Leave Us Alone Coalition and a controversial pioneer of conservative Muslim outreach, may not be the most reliable narrator. According to Norquist, the legislation in question, the Religious Land Use Act, "was one of the great victories of the religious right. And now some people want to scrap it to make this point?"
However, as Weigel points out, the politics of the Act were pretty thoroughly ecumenical, and bipartisan: "It's not that this was a partisan effort. It passed by voice vote in the House and Senate, and was helped through the higher body by Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.). The goal of the legislation, supported by a coalition of religious groups, was to...give churches, synagogues, mosques and other places of worship more power in disputes with local and municipal authorities."
