Our Government at Work

Big announcement from the White House just blasted out via email:

THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 29, 2010

Statement by the Press Secretary on H.R. 3951

On Monday, June 28, 2010, the President signed into law:

H.R. 3951, which designates a facility of the United States Postal Service as the Roy Rondeno, Sr. Post Office Building.

Obviously, this is the kind of stuff Congress does and has been doing for, well, forever. But it just seems particularly pathetic and feeble at this moment. Not to take anything away from Mr. Rondeno's tragic story, but it's difficult not to be cynical about government when our elected representatives can't muster the courage to pass critical items like an actual budget, and we're in Day 69 of the worst environmental disaster in history, but Congress can find time to pass a law, and the White House can expend the energy to put out a press release trumpeting the renaming of a post office.
