Richardson's In, Becerra Next?

President-elect Obama's selection of New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson for Commerce Secretary was no consolation prize, Obama said during a press conference this morning. In fact, it appears Richardson will have more than a full plate waiting for him, if confirmed by the Senate.

Obama noted that Richardson would be a key component of his economic team, helping businesses grow and create jobs. Then, of course, there's that little project known as the 2010 Census, which is still deep in strategic planning stages.

But the 'consolation prize' question asked of Obama by Telemundo Chicago reporter Vicente Serrano also got at the larger point that many in the Latino community are likely wondering: Will Richardson be the token Latino in the administration?

Well, it appears he may be joined by Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.), who reports indicate Obama has offered the job of U.S. Trade Representative. Becerra, elected to his ninth term in the Dodger Stadium-based 31st District, served as Assistant to the Speaker in the 110th Congress and was just elected vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus.
