Madame Secretary - Part II

The consensus among the pundit class seems to be that Hillary is not the right choice for Secretary of State. So says Tom Freidman, David Broder, Bronwen Maddox, David Harsanyi, and Michael Goodwin (because of Bill), among others. That display of agreement across the ideological spectrum, in and of itself, makes me think it might not be such a bad idea after all.
Additionally, the majority of people who responded to my post yesterday on the matter said it's a smart move by Obama, not only because Clinton is knowledgable, competent, and will probably do a decent job in the role, but also because it would take her out of the Senate where she might have more influence in shaping the agenda to her liking and put her in a more strictly defined role supporting Obama and his agenda.
Clinton's constituents appear to agree with that assessment, according to a Marist poll out today. 55% of registered voters in New York would like to see Clinton become Secretary of State, and 72% believe she will do either a "good" or "excellent" job leading the State Department.
Still, a number of people who responded to my informal survey believed it was a terrible idea, including a few self-identified Obama supporters who voiced disappointment that having Clinton in such a prominent role doesn't signify the kind of change they though they were voting for on November 4th.
UPDATE: Gallup also has a poll out today showing that 57% of Americans support the idea of Obama tapping Hillary Clinton for Secretary of State.
