Madame Secretary?

I admit that I dismissed early reports about Clinton being offered the top job at State as pure media gossip.  At the time it seemed - and still seems on a number of levels - a strange choice by Obama and also not the kind of job that Hillary Clinton would necessarily want, depending on whether you think she wants/is able to make another run at the presidency eight years from now.

But now it looks like it may actually happen.  The Guardian reports that Clinton is poised to accept the nomination, and Jake Tapper of ABC News also reports that "serious progress has been made" and that "both President-elect Obama and Sen. Clinton are increasingly optimistic that her assignment will happen."

I still don't totally get it. Would Hillary Clinton be a good Secretary of State? Probably. Would she always be singlemindedly focused on advancing Obama's agenda? Probably not.

Part of me thinks all this Abraham Lincoln "Team of Rivals" stuff has gone to Obama's head.  Maybe he's being confident, selfless, and super shrewd, keeping his friends close and his enemies closer. Or maybe he's being overconfident and naive, giving Hillary a place on the stage and a power base, at the same time he's stocking his administration with former Clintonites.

What's your opinion? Is Clinton a good choice for Secretary of State or not? Email me.
