Chambliss Expects Obama 'Force' In Runoff

Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss, engaged in a Dec. 2 runoff battle with Democratic challenger Jim Martin, said on MSNBC this afternoon that John McCain's visit today will help excite the base and that he expects President-elect Barack Obama to make his presence known in the state.
"The purpose is, obviously, to fire the troops up," Chambliss said, on why he invited McCain to campaign with him. "John is very popular here. He carried the popular vote overwhelmingly."
Chambliss said he called McCain shortly after the election to offer his support, and McCain offered to come to Georgia whenever Chambliss wanted. McCain isn't the only Republican trekking to the Peach State -- NRSC Chair John Ensign campaigned with Chambliss yesterday and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is scheduled to appear there Sunday.
While the Republican presidential nominee is appearing today, Chambliss said he expects President-elect Barack Obama's campaign ground game to be in full effect as well. "I'm absolutely certain that the Obama folks are on the ground," Chambliss said. "They did a great job in turning out Democratic votes in the general election. They're to be reckoned with in the runoff. We understand that. So we fully expect that they will be very much a force in this campaign."
