The Morning Report

In the Headlines

"Democrats Plot Detroit Rescue" (Jonathan Weisman, Greg Hitt and John McKinnon, Wall Street Journal) - Democratic leaders in Congress said Tuesday they will push legislation next week to use the $700 billion Wall Street rescue fund to bail out Detroit auto makers, and President-elect Barack Obama ordered his transition team to look at ways to aid the car industry even before his inauguration.

"Guantanamo Closure Called Obama Priority" (Peter Finn, Washington Post) - The Obama administration will launch a review of the classified files of the approximately 250 detainees at Guantanamo Bay immediately after taking office, as part of an intensive effort to close the U.S. prison in Cuba, according to people who advised the campaign on detainee issues.

"Senators to take tough votes on Lieberman, Stevens" (Manu Raju, The Hill) - Senate leaders return to Washington next week amid growing pressure across the political spectrum to reprimand two senior members of the usually collegial upper chamber.

"Obama softens ban on hiring lobbyists" (Michael Kranish, Boston Globe) - President-elect Barack Obama, who vowed during his campaign that lobbyists "won't find a job in my White House," said through a spokesman yesterday that he would allow lobbyists on his transition team as long as they work on issues unrelated to their earlier jobs.

On the Morning Shows

Morning Joe - Howard Dean, on the auto bailout: "You've got so many millions of jobs in the industry that you got to require them to modernize. ... What you cannot do is say here's the money. ... What's going on here is maddening. We've spent as much on AIG as Barack Obama's entire proposed renewable energy budget for 10 years. That's how much we spent on one company."
