With just two months left before he leaves office, President Bush's approval rating is at 27%, according to Gallup's latest tracking poll (Nov. 6-8). Today at the White House, he'll meet with his successor, President-elect Barack Obama, who's favorability rating in the same poll was 70%.
Of course, the two numbers aren't exactly comparable, as Obama has yet to make an executive decision while on the clock. The numbers to look at are the final approval ratings of other former presidents. If today were Bush's last day in office, he would have the lowest approval rating of any outgoing president in Gallup's history -- below even Harry Truman's cellar ratings in December 1952.
The brighter side of his approval rating: 27% of the current U.S. population (305 million) is 82 million -- so a large number of people still approve of his performance.
UPDATE: A reader correctly notes that the number is closer to 50 million, when referring to registered voters.
