Who will replace Obama in the United States Senate? Governor Rod Blagojevich is reportedly under pressure to replace Obama with another minority. Consequently, Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr.'s name is on the shortlist, as are Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett, Congressman Danny Davis, and Cheryle Jackson (President of the Chicago Urban League).
Obama's political mentor, the now retired State Senator Emil Jones, is also reportedly in the mix, but given Jones' age (72) and his past history as an old school ward boss, bringing him out of retirement and plunking him down in the United States Senate would be an exceedingly controversial decision that would smack of Chicago machine-style cronyism.
Also on the list is Iraq war veteran Tammy Duckworth (currently head of the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs), Jan Schakowsky (long time Congresswoman from IL-9), Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, Illinois State Comptroller Dan Hynes (who ran against Obama in the '04 Senate primary), and Attorney General Lisa Madigan.
And, of course, the scandal-plagued Governor could always appoint himself.
Joe Biden will also need a replacement for his seat in Delaware. Guess who's in the mix? Chris Cillizza says it could be David Plouffe.
Lastly, who will replace Rahm Emanuel representing Illinois' 5th District? Names in the rumor mill include Alderman Tom Allen, Pete Dagher (who ran against Rahm in the '02 primary), Obama/Axelrod buddy Forrest Claypool, and State Rep. John Fritchey.
