The Morning Report

In the Headlines

"The Final Push" (Shailagh Murray and Robert Barnes, Washington Post) - It took nearly two years, many ups and downs, countless smart moves, missed chances and lucky breaks. But finally Barack Obama could say the words: "One more day."

"New Economic Ills Will Force Winner's Hand" (Bob Davis, Jonathan Weisman and Timothy Aeppel, Wall Street Journal) - With a fresh blast of bearish news hitting just before the presidential election, Tuesday's victor will be under rising pressure to put his stamp on U.S. economic policy well before his Jan. 20 inauguration.

"Seeking upset, McCain to campaign Election Day" (Beth Fouhy, AP) - Pushing back against predictions of defeat, Republican John McCain scheduled campaign stops in two Western battlegrounds on Election Day after a seven-state sprint that brought him home to Arizona after midnight Tuesday.

"Democrats look ahead to a new era" (Aaron Blake, The Hill) - Democrats are within reach of their magic number this election — a 60 percent majority in both chambers of Congress. In the Senate, they could secure a filibuster-proof majority, which would set the seal on a new epoch of one-party domination.

From the Morning Shows

Today - Obama campaign manager David Plouffe: “If people don't turn out, we're going to be very close. When the [financial] crisis struck, McCain was very erratic, I think that benefited us.”

GOP strategist Mary Matalin: “McCain was leading until [the financial crisis]. They have the turnout mechanism in place, they're outperforming what they did in '04.  In the Democratic Primary, undecideds in the end did not cut to Barack Obama, they cut to Hillary Clinton.”

Fox and Friends - Plouffe: "There are many ways to win this election. Take Virginia, Ohio, Florida, Missouri, North Carolina, a lot of different states, and we've tried to compete in all of the them. ... All the punditry and the predictions sort of get washed away today."

Morning Joe - Howard Dean, in Arizona: "We think we can put Arizona over the top. But it's all get-out-the-vote at this point. ... This election is not about the past, it's about the future."

On Democrats controlling Congress and the White House: "Give us a chance. There's another election in four years, you can change it if you want."
