Palin Brings Up Ayers

Does Sarah Palin's mentioning of Bill Ayers yesterday indicate where the McCain campaign is about to go with a month until the election?

From the Post:

Seizing on a New York Times account Saturday of the relationship between Obama and Bill Ayers, who has confessed to domestic bombings as a member of the Vietnam-era Weather Underground, Palin told Republican donors in Colorado that Obama "is not a man who sees America as you and I do -- as the greatest force for good in the world."

Palin's comments came as Sen. John McCain's campaign signaled a new effort to go after Obama and were a distortion of what the Times story concluded: that the two men are not close but that Obama has played down his contacts with Ayers, who remains unrepentant about his actions but has been rehabilitated in the eyes of many Chicago political and civic leaders.

In a lot of ways, Ayers is an easier target for the McCain campaign than Jeremiah Wright. And, yes, much of that has to do with race. But whereas Wright's ramblings are indeed disgusting, they're almost too disgusting to throw in voters' faces, meaning that it could backfire. As an aging hippy with a radical past, Ayers is much more recognizable figure to most Americans than someone like Wright.

In any case, the Obama campaign immediately responded:

"Governor Palin's comments, while offensive, are not surprising, given the McCain campaign's statement this morning that they would be launching Swiftboat-like attacks in hopes of deflecting attention from the nation's economic ills,"

Also, in addition to Ayers, look to see more mentions of a guy named Tony Rezko.

UPDATE: Here's more, from ABC, of Palin's comments:

"Our opponent, though, is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect, imperfect enough that he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country," Palin told supporters at a $1,000-a-plate fundraiser in Englewood. "Americans need to know this." ...

"There has been a lot of interest in what I read, and what I read lately well, was reading my copy of today's New York Times and I was really interested to read about Barack's friends from Chicago," Palin said. "OK, now I get to bring this up not to pick a fight, but it was there in the New York Times, so we're gonna talk about it.

"And it turns out one of Barack's earliest supporters is a man who according to the New York Times, and are they ever wrong, according to the New York Times was a domestic terrorist and part of a group of that, quote, pushed a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol," Palin continued. "Wow. These are the same guys who think patriotism is paying higher taxes. This is not a man who sees America as I see America, OK?"
