Obama Campaign Questions McCain's Honor

The last attack in John McCain's latest ad hits Barack Obama on the same issue Alan Keyes used in their 2004 Senate race -- that Obama supports sex education for kindergarteners. Although Obama later clarified his support of "age-appropriate" sex education, Mitt Romney picked up on the attack in July 2007, after Obama discussed Keyes's comments on his position at a Planned Parenthood forum (Here is an ABC News video of it).

Politico's Jonathan Martin reported then that Romney had previously claimed the same position. And the Boston Globe quoted Obama spokesman Bill Burton saying "that the implication of Romney's assertion was 'misleading' and that the senator had been clear about his position: Young children need to have access to information that will protect them from sexual predators; communities should determine the curriculum; and parents should be free to have their children opt out."

Today, Burton responds to McCain's just-released ad with this statement:

"It is shameful and downright perverse for the McCain campaign to use a bill that was written to protect young children from sexual predators as a recycled and discredited political attack against a father of two young girls -- a position that his friend Mitt Romney also holds. Last week, John McCain told Time magazine he couldn't define what honor was. Now we know why."

UPDATE: McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers responds:

"The Obama campaign has not disputed any of the facts in our ad, but if they want to question John McCain's honor and record of service to this country, then that's a debate we welcome."
