In the Headlines
"Hurricane, Palin Roil the Start of GOP Convention" (Michael Abramowitz and Dan Balz, Washington Post) - Republicans plan on resuming their long-planned national convention schedule Tuesday, a day after their opening events were curtailed because of Hurricane Gustav and roiled by their presumptive vice president's announcement that her 17-year-old daughter is five months pregnant.
"Poll: Obama gets post-convention 'bounce'" (Susan Page, USA Today) - The Democratic National Convention significantly boosted Americans' views of Barack Obama as a strong leader who "shares your values" and can manage the economy and Iraq, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken Saturday and Sunday finds.
"In Political Realm, 'Family Problem' Emerges as Test" (Adam Nagourney, New York Times) - For at least the time being, Gov. Sarah Palin appears to have survived the initial test after the disclosure that her unmarried teenage daughter was pregnant. Republican delegates rallied around her on Monday, saying the disclosure would not threaten her hopes of being Senator John McCain's running mate.
"Obama labors on Labor Day" (James Oliphant, Chicago Tribune) - By Monday, Obama had abandoned any pretense of campaigning, tossing out his planned speech in Detroit before a large crowd of union members. Instead, in abbreviated remarks, he called on the nation to unite and encouraged supporters to send donations to the American Red Cross, saying "there is a time for us to argue about politics, but there is a time for us to come together as Americans."
On the Morning Shows
Today - Mary Matalin: "It was an open secret, it was not a disqualifier. It would have been completely inappropriate to roll out the vice presidential candidate with that information on that day. The delegates are not in any way put off by this."
Good Morning America - Nicole Wallace, senior McCain advisor, about the announcement of Palin's daughter's pregnancy: "The way the liberal blogs and a few in the mainstream media handled this forced their hand."
