Survey: Mountain West Latinos Favor Obama

Barack Obama is overwhelmingly favored by Latinos in the Mountain West states, according to a new Democracy Corps poll. With 1,003 likely voters surveyed in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico, 69% said they would vote for Obama while 24% said they'd choose John McCain.

Democrats have been targeting the Mountain West, which has largely favored Republican candidates for president over the last 50 years. Nevada's Democratic caucuses were bumped up to the front of the primary schedule, and Denver was chosen as the site of this year's Democratic convention. All four states surveyed voted for Pres. Bush in 2004, though Obama is looking to make inroads this year. He may have a tough time in McCain's home state of Arizona, but the Obama campaign has said it sees the other three states as prime pick-up opportunities.

According to the survey, 81% believe the country is going in the wrong direction. Jobs appear to be the No. 1 issue among Latinos in the Mountain West, as 34% said they believe the president and Congress should be focusing their efforts on the economy right now. Following the economy, the biggest concerns were Iraq (17%), energy and gas prices (12%), health care (9%) and immigration (8%).
