In the Headlines
"McCain's 'celebrity' taunts are bugging Obama" (Charles Babington, AP) - In a presidential campaign freighted with war, recession and energy woes, a jibe featuring Paris Hilton, of all things, seems to have struck a nerve in Democrat Barack Obama. For the second time in two weeks, he aired a TV ad Monday rebutting Republican John McCain's claim that Obama is little more than a celebrity, like the blonde hotel heiress.
"In candidates' approaches, clear contrast" (Michael Kranish, Boston Globe) - Senator John McCain, who has met the Republic of Georgia's president and whose chief foreign policy adviser has lobbied for the country, responded to the news Friday with visceral anger, condemning Russian forces' crossing into Georgia and warning of "grave" repercussions in long-term relations between Moscow and Washington.
"Indiana Senator Offers Obama Risks and Rewards" (Carl Hulse, New York Times) - As the Senate debate on the use of force against Iraq neared its climax in October 2002, Senator John McCain turned on the floor to Senator Evan Bayh to ask what had led him to take such "a visible, as well as important" role in seeking Congressional consent for military action.
"Voter Registration Is the New Battleground" (Corey Dade and John McKinnon, Wall Street Journal) - As Barack Obama tries to draw hundreds of thousands of new voters to the polls, Republicans are beginning to scrutinize registrants' eligibility as both sides draw a major battle line over voting rights.
On the Morning Shows
Fox and Friends - Gov. Tim Pawlenty, on McCain's response to the Georgia conflict: "One of the advantages of having experience in military and national-security matters is that you get the wisdom that comes with it."
Gov. Tim Kaine, on Obama's response: "I think the senator's goal was to be tough and smart ... and I'm very, very happy that the senator's request for a cease-fire has been complied with" [by the Russians].
