Obama Camp Focuses On IA, WI

While Barack Obama vacations in advance of the fast-approaching Democratic convention, his campaign has focused its efforts so far this week on Iowa and Wisconsin, two battleground states that were both decided by 1 point or less in the last two presidential elections.
TPM reported yesterday that the campaign has begun running a radio ad in Wisconsin, home of Harley-Davidson, hitting John McCain for not supporting a "Buy American" measure in Congress that would have prohibited the federal government from buying motorcycles from overseas companies (follow the link to hear the ad). McCain had recently appeared at a motorcycle rally in Sturgis, S.D. The campaign announced that it is also airing the 60-second ad today in York, Pa., where McCain is campaigning.
In a press release today, the campaign said it has opened six new offices in "rural Iowa" and is planning a "series of rural roundtable discussions" in the state. The campaign has previously said it is targeting the state, and likes its chances due to the amount of time Obama spent there prior to its January caucuses.
Also today, former Rep. Jim Leach, a moderate Iowa Republican who served 15 terms before being defeated in 2006, will be featured as the campaign announces its group of "Republicans for Obama." The group, as the New York Times reported yesterday, is led by Rita E. Hauser, a former fundraiser for both Bush presidents, and former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee, who like Leach was a moderate Republican ousted in 2006.
