Detroit Mayor Sent To Jail

In another twist to Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's legal troubles, he was ordered to jail this morning for leaving the country, a violation of his bond, according to the Detroit Free Press. Although he reportedly just went to the nearby Canadian city of Windsor, as the paper notes, a judge had placed new restrictions "on Kilpatrick's travel after Wayne County law enforcement officials accused him of assaulting them as they tried to serve a subpoena. The judge also revoked the mayor's personal recognizance bond and required him to post $7,500 cash to remain free."

Michigan Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, the mayor's mother, barely survived Tuesday's Democratic primary in her Detroit-based district. The six-term congresswoman received just 34% of the vote in a four-candidate field, edging her closest challenger by just 2 points. Kilpatrick, who ran unopposed in the 2006 general election, is now all but assured to return to Congress next year, as her district leans heavily Democratic.
