A new 7News/Suffolk University poll in Massachusetts shows McCain gaining on Obama, with the margin down to single digits (July 31-August 3, 400 RV, MoE +/- 4.9%). Obama leads with 47% to McCain's 38%, with 13% undecided. Obama had led by 23 points in the last Suffolk poll, conducted in early June.
Obama currently leads by 14.0 points in the RCP Average for Massachusetts.
Although the poll is close, the state is not considered in play. Democrats hold the governorship, both Senate seats and all 10 House seats; and the state gave John Kerry a 25-point win in 2004. Still, a margin far less than Kerry's would be an interesting change. As Suffolk political research director David Paleologos said, "it still appears an Obama outcome in Massachusetts is not in question, but the margin certainly is."
