Obama Surrogates Back Him On Iraq

In a conference call with reporters today, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden and senior foreign policy adviser Susan Rice assailed McCain's position on Iraq, and said Obama's strategy for Iraq -- as he clarified and layed out in a New York Times op-ed today -- was the right plan.

Obama's op-ed "was a recapitulation of what he's been saying now for several years," calling for a "responsible phased redeployment" of troops from Iraq, Rice said. "The troop levels that John McCain would want to sustain in Iraq are absolutely unsustainable," Rice continued, and his "position is fundamentally disconnected from reality." No matter the conditions on the ground, McCain "wants permanent bases, Korea style."

"Senator Obama's got it profoundly right," Biden said, "that now's the time to start to re-center our foreign policy by beginning a responsible redeployment of American combat troops. ... I don't understand anything about John's policy. John talks about the central concern is the war in terror, yet it's in Afghanistan. ... I don't know what he's talking about."

This appears to be a run-up to a speech by Obama on Iraq, as The Page reports that he is planning to give a "major policy address on Iraq and national security" in Washington tomorrow.
