Cantor Hits Obama's Iraq Policy

On a conference call with reporters, Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor spoke on behalf of the McCain campaign and questioned Obama's supposed unwillingness to change his views on withdrawing troops from Iraq.
Referring to a statement Sen. Claire McCaskill made on MSNBC this week, when she said Obama would not change his views before November, Cantor said he believes "that raises serious questions as to the sensibility of that position given what's going on in Iraq right now, what's going on on the ground."
Later in the call, Cantor reiterated his argument and fit the word "cling" in as well: "If he was for immediate withdrawal a year ago -- again, which may to some have made sense then -- how can it be now that that policy still makes sense today given that an immediate withdrawal right now may lead to the revival of al Qaeda in Iraq, it may lead to a re-energized Sunni insurgency, and frankly, could end up in a regrouping of some of the elements that our troops have been fighting to stop for some time now. A precipitous withdrawal, the likes of which Barack Obama has been clinging to for over a year now, just doesn't make sense."
UPDATE: The Obama campaign released a statement responding to the remarks made on the McCain conference call.
"Throughout this campaign, Barack Obama has been clear and consistent in saying that we need to responsibly end the war in Iraq so that we can restore our military strength, finish the fight in Afghanistan and focus on the terrorists who actually attacked us on 9/11. Today, eleven months after Barack Obama called for more troops in Afghanistan, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff supported that position while pointing out once again that the war in Iraq is shortchanging our effort in Afghanistan. Instead of questioning Barack Obama's consistent call for a new direction in Iraq and Afghanistan, John McCain should explain why he is offering nothing more than four more years of a failed foreign policy that has asked nothing of the Iraqi government, overstretched our military, failed to finish the job in Afghanistan, and failed to bring Osama bin Laden to justice for over six years," said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.
