The U.S. Census Bureau announced today that it projects the world population will reach 7 billion in the year 2012. The world hit 6 billion people in 1999, doubling the 3 billion mark reached in 1959.

The Census Bureau projects the world population will grow at a slower pace over the first half of the 21st Century than it did over the last half of the previous century.
