NC Poll: McCain +4

New North Carolina poll from the John W. Pope Civitas Institute (June 11-13, 600 RV) by Tel Opinion Research of shows McCain leading Obama by just four points:

McCain 45 (+1 vs. last poll in May)
Obama 41 (+2)
Barr 2
Undecided 12

Overall, McCain leads Obama in the RCP Average for North Carolina by 4.2%.

Some quick notes on the racial and ideological breakdowns in the Civitas poll:

African-Americans represented 18% of the total sample, and voted 86-7 for Obama. McCain won the white vote (79% of the sample) by 23 points, 54-31.

Obama had a significantly higher rate of party defectors in the poll than McCain. One in five Democrats (21%) indicated they would vote for McCain in November, while just 7% of Republicans said they would cross over for Obama. However, among "unafilliated" voters (16% of the sample), Obama dominated McCain 53 to 34.
