The Morning Report

In the Headlines:

"Obama, in Economic Tour, Criticizes McCain" (John Broder, New York Times) - With the Democratic stage to himself for the first time, Senator Barack Obama opened a two-week tour of battleground states on Monday, attacking Senator John McCain's economic policies and moving to focus on the ailing economy as the central theme of the general election campaign.

"Obama Vetter Draws Unwanted Scrutiny" (Lisa Lerer, The Politico) - In a presidential campaign where the subprime mortgage crisis and high corporate salaries figure to be staples of debate, [Jim] Johnson is now at risk of becoming a political liability for Obama, who's trying to sell anxious voters on an economic message that calls for stricter financial industry regulation and ridding Washington of special favors and tax breaks for wealthy CEOs.

"Barack Obama is $100M man" (Alexander Bolton, The Hill) - Leading Democratic fundraisers predict that Sen. Barack Obama will raise hundreds of millions of dollars over the next few months if he opts out of public financing and begins raising money for the general election. Specifically, they say Obama could raise $100 million in June and could attract 2.5 million to 3 million new donors to his campaign.

"McCain Expects to Win Va." (Tyler Whitley, Richmond Times-Dispatch) - Campaigning in Richmond yesterday, Sen. John McCain raised $800,000 for his presidential bid and revived his idea for a summer-long gas-tax holiday. The Arizona Republican also drew loud applause from hundreds of supporters at the Richmond Omni when he said: "I will carry Virginia."
