Democratic Convention In Trouble?

The New York Times reports that the Democratic Party and its Denver host committee are still some $15 million short of the $40.6 million it needs to raise by June 16 for its nominating convention being held at the end of August.

Some are speculating that the drawn-out primary process is distracting donors from contributing to the convention. However, the host committee's spokesperson said Denver is still ahead of where the Boston committee was in 2004, when John Kerry and Ted Kennedy led a last-minute fundraising charge.

The Twin Cities host committee for the Republican National Convention, being held September 1-4, is in far better shape. The committee's spokesperson said it was on budget and expects to have 80% of its target fundraising total by June 15.
