The Morning Report

In the Headlines:

"Memorial Day Draws Two Messages on Iraq" (Jeff Zeleny and Michael Falcone, New York Times) - If Labor Day is the traditional opener to the fall presidential race, this Memorial Day offered at least a preview into the summertime duel between Mr. McCain and Mr. Obama, who for the first time were campaigning in the same swing state on the same day.

"Obama, McCain are Dueling Out West" (Maeve Reston, Noam N. Levey and Scott Martelle, Los Angeles Times) - The top Democratic and Republican presidential contenders, Barack Obama and John McCain, brought their campaigns to the deserts of the American West on Monday, kicking off what is shaping up to be a fierce contest for the region in November.

"Burden on Dean to Bring Harmony" (Lisa Wangsness, Boston Globe) - On Saturday, the DNC's Rules and Bylaws Committee will meet to decide whether to seat the delegations from Florida and Michigan at the party's August national convention in Denver. The two states were barred from representation because they moved their primaries ahead of a DNC-imposed timetable; but now their votes are crucial to Clinton's dwindling chances at the presidential nomination.

"Candidates Compete For Tech Sector Backing" (Amy Schatz, Wall Street Journal) - Few presidential candidates have had as much experience dealing with technology and telecommunications issues as Sen. McCain, who for years chaired a Senate committee that deals with them. But he rarely brings tech issues up on the campaign trail and hasn't released many significant policy proposals about them yet.

From the Morning Shows:

Fox and Friends - Dick Morris, on Hillary's RFK comments: "Politically, it runs her out of being VP. I think before that happened, there was some momentum that Obama would have to put her on the ticket. I think that now that's happened, there's no momentum at all."

Good Morning America - George Stephanopoulos: "The DNC will not do what the Clinton campaign wants; they'll come up with some calculation that penalizes Michigan and Florida. Once these contests are done you are going to see several dozen super delegates go [Obama's] way." (Video)
