"In Fall Preview, McCain Slams Obama on Military Service" (Margaret Talev, McClatchy Newspapers) - Republican John McCain launched a harsh attack on Democrat Barack Obama's lack of military credentials Thursday, charging that the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination has "zero understanding" of veteran's issues.

"Petraeus Expects to Recommend Troop Cuts in Iraq This Fall" (Thomas Ricks and Karen DeYoung, Washington Post) - Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, said he expects to recommend additional cuts in U.S. troop levels there this fall. Petraeus said he would assess conditions before his departure in September, when he is scheduled to take over the U.S. Central Command.

"Obama Asks Jewish Voters to Judge Him on His Policies" (Jeff Zeleny, New York Times) - Senator Barack Obama sought to assure Jewish voters here on Thursday of his commitment to the security of Israel and implored them to disregard the false stories and rumors about his beliefs, background and foreign policy views toward the Middle East.

"McCain Appears Cancer-free, Healthy" (Lauran Neergaard and Liz Sidoti, Associated Press) - Three-time melanoma survivor John McCain appears cancer-free, has a strong heart and is in otherwise general good health, according to eight years of medical records reviewed by The Associated Press.

On the Morning Shows:

Morning Joe - David Axelrod, on McCain's opposition to Obama's GI Bill: "We have an honest disagreement and what was unfortunate is that Sen. McCain turned it into a personal one."

Today - Joe Biden on his Wall Street Journal op-ed today assailing Republicans on foreign policy and their criticisms of Obama: "I'm sick and tired of Republicans characterizing Democrats as being weak on national security. We've never been weaker in the last 100 years in terms of our position in the world than under this administration. Twenty percent of our party really is anti-war almost under any circumstance just like twenty percent of the Republican Party is probably ready to go to war under any circumstance."
