Still Standing

"Clinton Sees Many Reasons to Stay In," the New York Times reports today:

Mrs. Clinton has disagreed with suggestions, made directly to her by a few friends recently, that her continued candidacy was deepening splits within the Democratic Party...She has also disputed the notion that, by staying in, she was unintentionally fostering a racial divide with white voters in some states overwhelmingly supporting her.

Rather, in private conversations and in interviews, Mrs. Clinton has begun asserting that she believes sexism, rather than racism, has cast a shadow over the primary fight, a point some of her supporters have made for months. Advisers say that continuing her candidacy is partly a means to show her supporters--especially young women--that she is not a quitter and will not be pushed around.

To quote a frequent Saturday Night Live "Weekend Update" sketch--"Really!?" The nomination fight has been full of "they can't be serious" moments, but the real stunner here is that the racism/sexism charges are still flying. There are two candidates for the Democratic nomination, and, sadly, one will lose to the other. Given that they've made it this far, chances are it won't be because they're oppressed by race or sex...

Speaking of staying power, by the way, how about that Mike Huckabee? He earned 8.2 percent of the Kentucky vote (Ron Paul, won 6.8 percent), 10 percent in Indiana, and 12.1 percent in North Carolina. Not too bad for dropping out three months ago...
