The GOP's Forthcoming Clock-Cleaning?

That certainly appears to be the theme of the day, with major articles on the Republican party's malaise running across the country.
The Politico prescribes "Six Ways the GOP Can Save Itself"; meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal adds a double whammy, with Kim Strassel and Peggy Noonan both sounding the alarm. Noonan argues that while the Democrats are being born anew, "the Republicans are busy dying," while Strassel notes that the anger across the electorate is largely aimed at the GOP:
Encouraging this panicked discussion has been a new theory that the nation is experiencing a seismic political shift. A few short years ago, we were supposed to be on the verge of a lasting conservative majority. Scrap that. Now we're lurching toward a lasting "middle" majority. Voters are said to have embraced "centrism." (Whatever that is.) All hail "moderates." (Whoever they are.) And don't forget the Moveon.org crowd, who argue we are, in fact, on the verge of a lasting liberal majority.
There is, however, a proverbial elephant in the room, and it's not the GOP: Strassel also notes that "the Democratic Congress's approval rating clocked in at 18% -- the lowest in Gallup's history." That's no small potatoes, and it's sure to reflect in the November elections as well.
