Antoin "Tony" Rezko's lawyers stood by their signal Monday morning that no witnesses would be called in the defense.
After putting a list of exhibits into evidence that lawyer Joseph Duffy may point to in his closing argument next week, the defense rested and the jury was sent home until Monday.
As he left court, Duffy was asked by reporters what should be made of the defense's choice not to call any witnesses--Rezko included.
"We do not believe the government has met [its] burden proving the charges against Mr. Rezko, plain and simple," Duffy said.
Too bad, too. I suppose I was secretly hoping that Rezko would take the stand and try to bring down everybody in some fabulous Hollywood-type ending -- on the day of the Indiana and North Carolina no less.
Closing arguments begin next week.
