On this day in 1865 John Wilkes Booth shoots President Lincoln at Ford's Theater in Washington. Lincoln died the following morning. On to today's top stories:
"Obama Goes on Offense After Fumble" (Amy Chozick and Nick Timiraos, Wall Street Journal) It goes from gaffe to defiance to apology to "Shame on you" -- and all in the course of a couple days. Obama hit back at Clinton last night after taking it on the chin for most of the weekend, telling voters that Hillary was playing politics.
"DNC to Take McCain Complaint to Court" (Jim Snyder, The Hill) As its candidates bicker, the DNC plans to take on McCain in court. The party is filing suit against McCain to compel the FEC to investigate whether McCain violated election law by withdrawing from the matching funds program.
"McCain More Conservative Than His Image" (Libby Quaid, Associated Press) Reporter Quaid takes a look at McCain's record, only to find that on most hot-button issues the Republican nominee is a conservative.
"Candidates Let Ads Do the Talking" (Larry Eichel, Philadelphia Inquirer) As reporter Eichel notes, Pennsylvania was supposed to be the "new Iowa," with all the face-time in-state that phrase meant. Instead, the candidates have relied more on TV/radio ads than actual retail politicking.
"For Obama, Unexpected Support" (Shailagh Murray, Washington Post) Obama isn't known for his antiabortion stance, at least as pro-lifers would define it. And yet he's picked up the support of several pro-life Democrats, such as PA Sen. Bob Casey.
"Gun Rights Splits Pa. Democrats" (Leah Fabel, Washington Examiner) To win PA, Obama needs both the blue-collar voters and the wealthier suburban sect -- two groups which see gun rights and Obama's comments about guns differently.
"Rendell says Obama doesn't know people of Pa." (Steve Twedt, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) Gov. Ed Rendell, a Clinton supporter, blasted Obama for his comments while campaigning for Hillary in Pittsburgh yesterday. Rendell attributed Obama's gaffe to not having spent enough time in the state.
"Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. Returns to Pulpit at Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church" (Manya Brachear, Chicago Tribune) You might have thought that the Obama campaign had secreted Wright away to some undisclosed location. Instead, the preacher turned up at a funeral and blasted the media, who of course were there to report it.
"Poll Finds Public Skeptical About Opinion Surveys" (Jennifer Harper, Washington Times) You have to love that headline.
