The Daily 2008

On this day in 1989 the Exxon Valdez runs aground off the coast of Alaska, spilling 11 million gallons of oil into the water. On to today's top stories:

"2 McCain Moments, Rarely Mentioned" (Elisabeth Bumiller, New York Times) Moment One: In 2001, talks between McCain and the Senate Democratic leadership about the possibility of switching parties; Moment Two: In 2004, talks between John Kerry and McCain about a unity ticket. Democrats have their versions of both stories, which have McCain as the protagonist; McCain says he was approached.

"Both Obama And Clinton Embellish Their Roles" (Shailagh Murray and Jonathan Weisman, Washington Post) We all do it on our resumes, so what's the harm in a presidential candidate doing it as well? In any case, an interesting look into where both Democrats are padding their records complete with quotes from those, some even allies, who were the real force behind the accomplishments.

"Clinton Campaign Touts Value of Big-State Victories" (Amy Chozick, Wall Street Journal) Hillary Clinton has few benchmarks on which to make her case to the superdelegates. But one big benchmark she is using are her victories in states like Ohio, California and Texas.

"McCain's Record on Iraq Is Decidedly Mixed Bag" (Bob Drogin, New York Sun) McCain often takes credit for calling for the surge long before the administration as well as expressing his disapproval of Donald Rumsfeld. Reporter Drogin takes a look at McCain's other statements and predictions on the Iraq war and finds the record isn't so clear.

"Clinton Papers Reveal Donor, Embargo Ties" (Jerry Seper, Washington Times) Digging through the 11,000 pages of White House records so you don't have to, reporter Seper finds close ties between donors and the East Wing.

"Calls For Probe Over Passports Gains Support" (Jay Solomon, Wall Street Journal) Just as the weekend approached, news broke of unauthorized breaches into the candidates' passports. Now some on the Hill and in the Justice Dept. are urging a fuller investigation into what happened and why.

"This Time Evangelicals Aren't Just GOP Voting Bloc" (Christopher Quinn, Atlanta Journal-Constitution) Will evangelicals go for a Democrat in November? This article tries to make the case that some might. Could happen, but the more likely possibility is that evangelicals might switch parties, but rather that they could sit it out all together.

"Obama Leaves Oregon After Two Days of Stumping" (Janie Har, The Oregonian) Oregon, which votes May 20, is one of those latter state firewalls for the Obama campaign that could stop a Clinton push following Pennsylvania. It's safe Obama country, for now, but that doesn't mean the candidate is taking it for granted.

"Hagel Cool On Backing McCain" (Klaus Marre, The Hill) It seems spring is Hagel season. About this time last year, the buzz was whether Chuck Hagel would enter the race as an anti-war Republican. So important was the decision that Hagel held a press conference to say he was undecided. Now we're all waiting on whether he'll back McCain. Another press conference perhaps?
