Judas vs. Joe McCarthy

Bill Richardson - dubbed Judas by James Carville in the NY Times on Friday - says he won't "get down in the gutter" and that there's too much negativity on both sides in the Democratic race:

A couple of hours later, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe defended Gen. McPeak's comparison of Bill Clinton to Joe McCarthy and slammed Hillary for "wallowing" in lobbyist cash. The Clinton campaign is holding a conference call in 30 minutes in which they will no doubt strafe the Obama campaign for its conduct.

Put bluntly, this race is getting nastier by the minute. The poor Easter Bunny was lucky he (or she) didn't get caught in the crossfire.

UPDATE: It's worse than I thought. Obama's Iowa co-chairman, Gordon Fischer (via Tapper):

"Bill Clinton cannot possibly seriously believe Obama is not a patriot, and cannot possibly be said to be helping -- instead he is hurting -- his own party. B. Clinton should never be forgiven. Period. This is a stain on his legacy, much worse, much deeper, than the one on Monica's blue dress."

UPDATE Ia: Fischer has pulled down the post and put up what he calls "A Sincere and Contrite Apology."

UPDATE II: After decrying the Obama campaign's negative attacks, Clinton Communications Director Howard Wolfson dodges a question about James Carville's calling Bill Richardson "Judas" claiming - set down soda or coffee before continuing - insufficient knowledge of the Bible to judge the accuracy/legitimacy of Carville's comparison.
