Paging Gore, Carter?

ABC News' Nitya Venkataraman has an article today asking "Who has the power to end the Clinton-Obama race?"
She floats the idea that a party leader or committee of "elders" could step in and resolve the primary. The usual suspects are mentioned: Carter, Gore, on one end, and on the other, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. Also thrown in is Howard Dean.
Could any one individual or a group resolve the mess? One problem with it is how is a smaller group of unelected party elders any more democratic or fair than a larger group of unelected party elders, otherwise known as superdelegates. And does the party want to set a precedent of using extraordinary means outside the system in place for choosing nominees?
Also, what would, say, Gore or a Gore-led committee actually do? Decide the nominee? Pick the criteria, whether it be popular vote, pledged delegates, etc. for nomination? Act as a moderator to find solutions to problems like the Florida/Michigan revotes?
In short, I think the inclusion of an elite group of super-superdelegates would only exacerbate the problems the party already faces.
