The Irony Of Michigan

It's an interesting bit of irony that Michigan, whose leaders moved the state's primary into January to have a bigger impact on the Democratic nominating process, could now be more important than ever due to its placement at the end of the line.

If Michigan Democrats can somehow pull off organizing (and paying for) a primary by June 3, as a number of outlets have reported is the plan, they will put themselves right back in the mix of this exciting race. Of course, South Dakota and Montana probably are not excited about this, as they would have to share the final spot on the calendar with a state poised to take the spotlight.

Funding the primary is clearly a major issue right now. Private donors can give unlimited dollar amounts to the state party -- which certainly helps. It will be interesting to see who the major donors are -- Clinton or Obama supporters. You'd have to think they will be Clinton backers, as the demographic profile of the state appears to give Clinton the advantage. Plus, the Obama campaign has stated its preference that in lieu of a primary the candidates be given an even number of pledged delegates seated at the convention.

You can't really take anything from the first Michigan contest, since Clinton was the only candidate on the ballot. But, even though she was the only candidate on the ballot, she still only received 55% of the vote. Could this be telling of her fortunes in June? Who knows.
