The Daily 2008

On this day in 1962 astronaut John Glenn orbits the Earth three times, the first American to do so. Also on this day in 1992 Ross Perot announces his candidacy for president. Now for today's top stories:

"Obama Chips Away at Clinton's Usual Hard Core of Supporters" (Paul Kane and Jon Cohen, Washington Post) It's always a question how much one state reflects overall voting patterns. But if Wisconsin is any reflection of how Democratic voters are feeling across the country, then Barack Obama is sitting pretty. He managed to break in to much of Hillary Clinton's demographic base last night, which puts her strength in other states -- like Texas and Ohio -- is serious jeopardy. Again, this race will go to March 4 and then will we know if Wisconsin was the harbinger.

"McCain Heads Off Huckabee Surprise in Wisconsin" (David Lightman, McClatchy Newspapers) John McCain's win in Wisconsin last night did a little more than bring him closer to the magic 1,191 delegates needed for the nomination. More importantly, he beat Mike Huckabee soundly by strengthening his support among conservative voters, whom he split with Huckabee.

"Huckabee Says Passion Keeps Him in Race" (Andrew DeMillo, Associated Press) Which brings us to the question that's been asked a thousand times: Why hasn't Huckabee withdrawn? It's not his ego, he says, "it's about convictions." Well, whatever it is, one practical benefit of Huckabee's continuation is that he has built himself a nice, solid base of support that will help in either a future run or whatever political ambition the governor has in mind.

"Clinton Says Obama Relies on 'Words'" (Beth Fouhy, Associated Press) Although Clinton called Obama to congratulate him on his victory, she mostly ignored Wisconsin in her speech to supporters in Ohio last night. Her message however was directed at the Illinois senator: "It's about picking a president who relies not just on words, but on work, hard work."

"Comments Bring Wives Into Fray in Wisconsin" (Michael Cooper, New York Times) Another sign that the race is coalescing around Obama and McCain: Cindy McCain took a not-so-veiled shot at Michelle Obama yesterday when she said she was very proud of her country.

"Texas Latino Bloc Not as Clear" (Amy Chozick, Wall Street Journal) Hispanic voters have been a major part of Hillary's path to the nomination. In California, they went for Hillary 2-to-1 over Obama. But in Texas, where the Hispanic community is on average younger, things look murkier for Clinton. Add in Obama's momentum from 10 straight primary victories, and what once looked like a Clinton lock is now anything but.

"McCain Raised Nearly $12 Million in January, Propelled By Victories" (Associated Press) It's not Barack Obama numbers, but McCain managed to turnaround his fundraising operation by picking up victories in South Carolina and New Hampshire. When one considers that McCain entered the new year in debt and still borrowing, how he managed to escape political oblivion is a pretty remarkable story.

"Security is GOP Game Plan" (Alexander Bolton, The Hill) Using debate over FISA legislation to kick start the election season, the GOP is going back to the basics when it comes to attacking Democrats: National Security. The idea is to portray Democrats as reckless or naive on keeping Americans safe. It's worked in the past, except when it hasn't, as in 2006.

"McCain's Rise May Upset Democrats' Western Strategy" (Jonathan Weisman, Washington Post) One major reason Democrats chose Denver as their convention city is that the party felt that the Mountain West, with its large Hispanic population, is up for grabs. But with the emergence of McCain as the GOP standard-bearer, Hispanics might not be as inclined as they once were to instinctively vote against a Republican.
