Another Clintonite has jumped over to the Obama camp. The Swamp has the details:
David Wilhelm, who managed Bill Clinton's winning 1992 presidential campaign and went on to be the youngest Democratic National Committee chairman in history, is set to endorse Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) this afternoon.
Which means, of course, that he's going against Clinton's wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.)
Obama's presidential campaign has scheduled a 1 p.m. endorsement conference call from Ohio, where Wilhelm was raised and now works as a venture capitalist.
It will be the second time this election cycle that Wilhelm has backed a Democrat not named Clinton. He advised Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) in his short-lived White House bid. (Wilhelm also worked for Biden in his 1988 presidential run; his other clients have included Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley.)
The early endorsment of Biden makes sense, in light of Wilhelm's close relationship with the Delaware senator. The leap to Obama, however, marks a clear departure from the Clintononian circle in the party.
Wilhelm also recently co-founded an online community for Christian Democrats called FaithfulDemocrats.com. Their mission, to "provide a Christian-focused, Democratic community online" may speak volumes about the kind of Democratic niche Barack Obama is carving out.
