McCain Opts Out

There's been a lot of speculation about whether John McCain would be forced to accept federal matching funds. We finally have an answer:
Sen. John McCain will not accept public campaign financing for the primary election - freeing him from spending limits through September and giving him a chance to compete with his Democratic opponent.
I'm sure the deciding factor was that Clinton and Obama are locked in a struggle that could last through the spring, if not all the way to the Democratic convention in August. They're both raising and spending vast sums to secure the nomination, which takes at least some of the pressure off McCain to try and match what has been a torrid fund raising pace.
