I find it fascinating that while the broad view of the Democratic results last night is basically split decision between Clinton and Obama, in reality it was a series of really lopsided individual contests. Only three of the twenty-two states in play last night were decided by a margin of five points or less: Connecticut (4 pts), Missouri (1 pt), and New Mexico (1 pt). All went for Obama. (UPDATE: New Mexico hasn't been called yet. My mistake.)
Overall, Clinton had an average margin of victory of 17.5% in the eight states she won, while Obama's margin of victory in the 14 contests he carried was 26.4%.
It was a little more competitive on the Republican side. Six races were decided by 5 or less points: Alabama (4 pts), Georgia (2 pts), Missouri (1 pt), Oklahoma (4 pts), Tennessee (2 pts) and West Virginia (5 pts). And yet the outcome for the Republicans was the emergence of a solid front runner, thanks in large part to the fact that McCain won six of eight of the winner take all states last night for a haul of 312 delegates.
