McCain: Roberts Yes; Alito Eh, Maybe

This line from John Fund's Wall Street Journal column today is making its way through the conservative blogosphere, where the general consensus is best described as a bunch of incoherent swear words followed by a broken pc monitor:
More recently, Mr. McCain has told conservatives he would be happy to appoint the likes of Chief Justice John Roberts to the Supreme Court. But he indicated he might draw the line on a Samuel Alito, because "he wore his conservatism on his sleeve."
Unlike, say, McCain, who likes to keep conservatives guessing.
UPDATE: Over at the Corner, Byron York spoke with McCain today about Fund's column:
"Let me just look you in the eye," McCain told me. "I've said a thousand times on this campaign trail, I've said as often as I can, that I want to find clones of Alito and Roberts. I worked as hard as anybody to get them confirmed. I look you in the eye and tell you I've said a thousand times that I wanted Alito and Roberts. I have told anybody who will listen. I flat-out tell you I will have people as close to Roberts and Alito [as possible], and I am proud of my record of working to get them confirmed, and people who worked to get them confirmed will tell you how hard I worked."
Also, Ramesh Ponnuru has a few links showing where McCain has spoken favorably of Alito in the past.
In one article, McCain calls Roberts and Alito "two of the finest justices ever appointed to the United States Supreme Court."
And in Ponnuru's own interview with McCain from last March there's this:
Ponnuru: Are there any members of the current Supreme Court that you particularly admire or regard as a model?
Sen. McCain: Eh of course, Antonin Scalia. He's a lot of our conservative models, I admire how articulate he is, but I also from everything I've seen I admire Roberts as well.
I think it's vital to strictly interpret the Constitution of the United States and have a record of that. Not just a statement of it, but a record of it.
