Back to the Future

MIAMI, FL - Barack Obama in his victory speech in South Carolina Tuesday night:

We're looking to fundamentally change the status quo in Washington - a status quo that extends beyond any particular party.[snip]

The choice in this election is not between regions or religions or genders. It's not about rich versus poor; young versus old; and it is not about black versus white.

It's about the past versus the future.

The Washington Post this morning on Ted Kennedy's endorsement:

The Kennedy stamp of approval was one of the most sought-after prizes of the Democratic nomination battle, and it represents a coup for the Illinois senator, adding an establishment seal of approval to what began a year ago as a long-shot White House bid.

Not to diminish the context or the significance of Kennedy's endorsement of Obama, but there is a bit of irony here. Really, is there anyone in Washington DC who is more symbolic of the status quo and the past than Ted Kennedy?
