A Closer Look at the SC Counties

Obama won the South Carolina Democratic primary with 55% of the vote, a lopsided victory in the first southern state of the primary schedule.

Of the 46 counties in South Carolina, 35 counties have a majority of white registered voters, and 11 have a majority of non-white registered voters. In the counties where more than 50% of the registered voters are not white, Obama won 68% of the vote, Clinton won 21% and Edwards 10%. In white-majority counties, Obama won 54%, Clinton 27% and Edwards 19%.

Obama won 44 of SC's 46 counties. Horry County, the eastern-most county in the state, was carried by Clinton, while Oconee, the western-most county in the state, was carried by Edwards. Obama's closest victory was in Pickens County, where he won by just 1 point. Of SC's 46 counties, Horry, Oconee and Pickens counties have the three largest majorities of white registered voters.
