The Daily 2008

On this day in 1965 Winston Churchill died in London at the age of 90. On to today's top stories:

"Bill Clinton Accuses Obama Camp of Stirring Race Issue" (Katharine Seelye, New York Times) "Shame on you," said the former president when asked about injecting race into the Democratic primary. Yes, having thrown himself into the campaign, Bill Clinton is on the defensive. Will it matter?

"Some in Party Bristle At Clintons' Attacks" (Alec MacGillis and Anne Kornblut, Washington Post) A new ad is raising eyebrows at how far -- and to what ends -- the Clintons will go to beat Obama. Some Democrats are saying that not all's fair in politics and war.

"Romney's Wallet Keeps Him in the Race" (Elizabeth Holmes, Wall Street Journal) The one thing Mitt Romney's got that the other Republican candidates don't have is money, and he's going to need it going forward. Having won only one significant primary to date (Michigan), Romney is facing a question of confidence, but his organization and resources might pull him through.

"Times Poll: McCain, Romney are Neck and Neck" (Adam Smith, St. Petersburg Times) Capitalizing on two important victories in New Hampshire and South Carolina, John McCain has pulled even with Romney in Florida. Where this leaves Rudy Giuliani, who hasn't won anything, is in a struggle for third with Mike Huckabee.

"Super Tuesday Won't Decide Nominations" (Stephen Ohlemacher, Associated Press) The original idea was that Feb. 5 -- Super Tuesday -- was going to be a coronation of sorts for both party nominees. It's looking, however, like the day of days will just intensify the campaign.

"RNC Chairman Provides Numbers, Strategy to Defeat Top Democrats" (Sam Youngman, The Hill) Facing the very real possibility that the entire government might be in Democratic hands next year, Mike Duncan, chairman of the RNC, rallied the troops by claiming both Obama and Clinton are beatable.

"Clinton's Hispanic Edge" (Gebe Martinez, The Politico) Many states that vote on Feb. 5, particularly California, have large Hispanic populations. Clinton is beating out Obama for their vote.

"The Chinks in Giuliani's 9/11 Armor" (Stephen Braun, Los Angeles Times) Running on a very controversial day, like running on a war in John Kerry's case, opens you up to charges, fair or not, that could unravel the carefully constructed image.

"Bloomberg in D.C.: 'The Jig Is Up'" (Russell Berman, New York Sun) Yes, it's your Daily Bloomberg! In this case, the NYC Mayor is none too pleased with Washington's stimulus package.
