The Daily 2008

On this day in 1801 President John Adams appoints John Marshall as chief justice of the Supreme Court, a position he would hold for 34 critical years. Now for today's top stories:

"Obama Faces Off Against Both Clintons" (Carrie Budoff Brown, The Politico) Barack Obama said yesterday that he's tired of the "unbelievable falsehoods" coming from both Hillary Clinton and husband Bill and promised to challenge them for the rest of the campaign.

"Republican Field Rides Full Force Into Florida Test" (Adam Nagourney, New York Times) Florida will be a test for two primary opponents: John McCain, who must prove that the momentum he's claimed from victories in New Hampshire and South Carolina is real; and Rudy Giuliani, who must prove that his strategy of avoiding the early primary states pays off.

"McCain Likely to Cruise to Super Tuesday" (Ralph Hallow, Washington Times) Even with the historical precedent of South Carolina moving him forward, McCain still needs to prove that he can win over Republicans and conservatives, and not rely on independents to put him over the top.

"A Shift Toward Obama Is Seen Among Blacks" (Krissah Williams, Washington Post) With blacks making up half of the electorate in South Carolina, the battle for their vote between Clinton and Obama looks all but over. Winning huge majorities of the blacks in previous states, Obama will head into South Carolina with nearly their full support.

"Republican Presidential Candidates Now Head to Florida: What Do They Need to Win?" (Marc Caputo, Miami Herald) A look at the make-up of Florida Republican politics and what the candidates need to do to win over 55 voters, who make up three-quarters of the electorate.

"Giuliani Betting All on Florida Contest" (Brian Mooney, Boston Globe) We've heard this story before: A certain candidate needs to win a certain state or it's over. Though disproved plenty so far this season, for Rudy, it's hard to see how his campaign wouldn't take a lethal hit should he lose Florida.

"Norris Says McCain Too Old for President" (April Castro, Associated Press) Apparently Chuck Norris didn't endorse McCain for president because of the Arizona senator's age. "I'm just afraid that the vice president would wind up taking over his job in that four-year presidency," said the Huckabee supporter.

"Edwards: Dems Need Him to Face McCain" (Jim Davenport, Associated Press) Battling to stay relevant in a race where he's failed to win any states, John Edwards has fallen back on an electability argument.

"GOP Remains Fractured, Democrats Face a Long Fight" (Steven Thomma, McClatchy Newspapers) Even with victories over the weekend, neither Clinton, McCain or Romney can claim frontrunner status, as the race moves closer to the day of days, Feb. 5
