The Daily 2008 - NV, SC Edition

Welcome to this Saturday Primary/Caucus Edition of The Daily 2008. Here are today's top headlines:

"GOP Race Is Close in S.C." (Dan Balz and Juliet Eilperin, Washington Post) John McCain and Mike Huckabee are battling it out in South Carolina today in a neck-and-neck race that will either launch their campaigns into possible frontrunner status or end them.

"Voting Efforts Push to the End" (Lorena Anderson, Myrtle Beach Sun News) With the campaigning all finished, it's a game of numbers now in South Carolina, with each candidate's GOTV team pushed into high gear.

"McCain and Huckabee Avoid Sparring in Final South Carolina Push" (Michael Cooper and Michael Powell, New York Times) In a strange twist, both frontrunners have more or less pledged to refrain from attacking each other.

"Voters to Face Snow in S.C." (Stephen Dinan, Washington Times) With up to three inches expected today across South Carolina, the large turnout expected might now happen. Meanwhile, campaigning yesterday, Fred Thompson hit Mike Huckabee for the latter's claim that the Constitution was a "living, breathing document." "The last time I heard that was when Al Gore used that in the 2000 campaign," said Fred.

"In Nevada, Campaigns Face a Common Foe" (Jeff Zeleny and Patrick Healy, New York Times) And that foe is, according to reporters Zeleny and Healy: "What exactly is a caucus?"

"Nevada Caucus: What's On the Line?" (Molly Ball, Las Vegas Review-Journal) A short rundown of the Nevada Caucuses, their history, etc., provided by reporter Ball.

"When Attacked, Obama's Now Hitting Back" (Shailagh Murray and Alec MacGillis, Washington Post) Finishing a week's worth of rough campaigning, Barack Obama closed out with a stump speech in Reno, where he rebutted Hillary Clinton's criticisms of his positions on Social Security and the nuclear waste site at Yucca Mountain.

"Clinton Camp Goes After Obama's Reagan Comments" (Aaron Blake, The Hill) John Edwards was first, then came Hillary hitting Barack Obama for laudatory comments he made regarding Ronald Reagan, who isn't exactly revered in Democratic circles.

"Close Contest Could Make Edwards Kingmaker" (Ben Smith, The Politico) Reporter Smith looks at the role John Edwards might play at a convention, where he would wield great power in deciding which of the two frontrunners gets the nomination.
