From the Union Leader, on the scene:
MANCHESTER -- Long lines of people formed inside some polls this morning minutes after they opened at 6 a.m. for the New Hampshire presidential primary.
Louise Gosselin, Ward 6 moderator, said election officials expected about 150 people to vote each hour at St. Pius X on Candia Road.
Instead, about 300 people each hour were casting ballots. By 8 a.m., 602 people had voted. About 70 new voters were registered.
"I believe if it continues this way we definitely will set a record," said Gosselin.
Television reporters, with their videographers, vans and satellites, took up about half the parking lot at Brookside Congregational Church where Ward 1 voters cast their votes.
Journalists and cameramen surrounded Rudy Giuliani, the first candidate to arrive, followed by Mike Huckabee, Hillary Clinton and Mitt Romney. It was their final attempt to sway voters their way.
There were so many news people that voters had difficulty getting by them to enter the poll.
At one point, ward selectman Karen Sheehan-Lord came out, corralled the media and moved them back behind some wooden barriers, telling them they had to make room for the voters..
"They were here when we got her at 5 a.m.," she said.
Sheehan-Lord also asked Giuliani to move as well. "He was very gracious when we asked him to move," she said.
Voters were lined up when the poll opened, said election volunteer Roger Sevigny, the state's insurance commissioner.
"It's been very busy and it's only 6:20 a.m.," he said.
Inside, somewhat patient voters waited in a long line to cast their ballots. One man grumbled about the media being allowed inside.
"We've had big lines," Sheehan-Lord said. This is her second Presidential primary so, she said, she does not know if this is the biggest voter turnout ever.
"I don't know if we have had lines as long as this" but, she said, "This is big."
