Fred Hits Mitt Over McCain-Feingold

Enough names for you? According to CBS News, this morning in Iowa Fred Thompson went after Romney for once having supported McCain-Feingold. That Thompson himself was also a supporter and even helped draft some of it is besides the point apparently.

"Governor Romney supported McCain-Feingold," Thompson said. "He's changed his position on that just like he has so many other things."

So it's an issue of flip-flopping, not McCain-Feingold per se? Well maybe:

"Mitt Romney was not only for campaign finance reform and McCain-Feingold, he supported public financing, so I'd love to have a little discussion with him on it," Thompson said.

Thompson himself has since disavowed McCain-Feingold, too. So it's hard to say where he's going with this line of attack.

UPDATE and CORRECTION: Thompson in fact still supports limits on campaign contributions and defended his views today: "A lot of my Republican colleagues still have a hard time with it -- they don't understand it and I appreciate that. But standing up, putting the government in the right place to do its job, to do things as best we can to minimize the temptation and the opportunity for corruption ... is still a valid, solid, conservative concept that I stand for." That puts his attack on Romney in better light.
