On this day in 2000 the Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision ruled on Bush v. Gore. Now for today's top election stories:
"Feeling Heat, Clinton Tries Iowa Up Close" (Adam Nagourney and Patrick Healy, New York Times) Having enjoyed frontrunner status for an entire year, Hillary Clinton, facing disappointing numbers in Iowa, has to prove whether she can fight back.
"In Poll, Huckabee Closes on Giuliani" (Jon Cohen and Dan Balz, Washington Post) A new ABC/Wash Post poll shows a very tight GOP race nationally, while on the Democratic side, Clinton, over 50%, maintains her double-digit lead.
"In N.H., Iraq War Fading as Key Issue" (Jill Zuckman, Chicago Tribune) What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time, Democrats were swept into office by a public weary of the Iraq war. This year, the war, although still a major issue, is fading a bit.
"Electability Makes Its Return to Dem Primary as Clinton and Obama Joust" (Aaron Blake and Sam Youngman, The Hill) Even as Barack Obama campaigns as a uniter candidate, the Clinton campaign, using recent poll data, is making the claim that she is the most electable.
"National Review Nod Gives Romney a Boost" (Michael Levenson, Boston Globe) A write-up for what National Review's endorsement of Mitt Romney might mean for his campaign.
"Immigration Moves to Front and Center of G.O.P. Race" (Michael Cooper and Paul Vitello, New York Times) Romney comes out with a hard-hitting ad knocking Mike Huckabee's immigration positions; in turn, Huckabee responds with the endorsement of Minutemen founder Jim Gilchrist. As the race comes down to the wire, it might very well turn on immigration politics.
"Clinton Basks in Buffett Glow" (Amy Chozik and Monica Langley, Wall Street Journal) Even as Clinton aggressively seek his endorsement, Warren Buffet says he will support both her and Obama. So, thanks for nothing, right?
"If Clinton Loses Iowa: Her 'Plan B'" (Beth Fouhy and Philip Elliott, Associated Press) It's no secret what 'Plan B' is: New Hampshire, where Clinton is preparing to hit Obama hard in ads.
"Shea-Porter endorses Obama as 'our future'" (Sarah Liebowitz, Concord Monitor) And speaking of New Hampshire, Rep. Carol Shea-Porter ended her neutrality and endorsed Obama.
