The Daily 2008

Happy Monday, otherwise known as "One Month Away From Iowa Caucuses Day." On this day in 1818 Illinois became the 21st state. On to today's top election stories:

"Losing Ground In Iowa, Clinton Assails Obama" (Anne Kornblut, Washington Post) Forget delicacy, Hillary and her campaign are quite open about their strategy to attack Obama on his "reputation for honesty."

"Pressed, Romney to Speak on His Mormonism" (Michael Levenson, Boston Globe) Titled "Faith in America," Romney's speech, scheduled for Thursday, is being compared to JFK's speech in 1960 addressing concerns about his Catholicism. The thinking is that Romney wanted wanted to avoid bringing his faith to the trail, but the emergence of Mike Huckabee in Iowa has forced his hand.

"Lonely No More, Huckabee Faces Hurdles" (Adam Nagourney, New York Times) Speaking of whom, having spent just a fraction of what Romney has in Iowa, Huckabee now has to contend with the burdens of being a (slight) frontrunner there.

"Obama's Gains Show Volatility of Iowa Contest" (Jackie Calmes, Monica Langley and Christopher Cooper, Wall Street Journal) And swinging back to the Democrats, while Obama leads (slightly) in Iowa, more than half in the weekend Des Moines Register poll said they were undecided.

"Giuliani Takes Aim at Dems' Tax Plans" (Glen Johnson, New Hampshire Union-Leader) As frontrunners do, Giuliani is striking at his possible opponents in the general election. (Also, if you missed the Union-Leader's endorsement of John McCain yesterday, here it is.)

"N.H., Iowa Republicans Care More About Terror Than Rudy Giuliani's Trysts" (Celeste Katz and Michael Saul, New York Daily News) Anecdotal interview with early state voters reveal the good news for Rudy, whose personal life again took a hit last week over fuzzy spending practices.

"Heavy Doubt for Edwards' Big Promises" (Scott Martelle, Los Angeles Times) Perhaps one of the factors hurting Edwards' bid is that voters, when they hear all of his campaign promises, just don't believe him.

"Paul Expects Over $12M in 4th Quarter" (Hope Yen, Associated Press) Libertarian upstart Paul has perhaps some of the most giving supporters out there; it's just too bad there aren't more of them. But the Paul fundraising story is shaping up to be one of the most interesting of the season's many campaign twists.

" 'Nonpartisan Groups' Help Hillary's Bid" (Donald Lambro, Washington Times) Ostensibly non-partisan, and therefore tax-exempt, a network of think tanks and bloggers were in fact created by many old Clintonites, who are now, both directly and indirectly, helping her campaign.
