On this day in 1954 Alger Hiss was released from prison, having served four years for perjury. Now for today's top election stories:
"Web Videos Aim Questions At GOP Field" (Jose Antonio Vargas, Washington Post) The infamous snowman will likely be back at tomorrow night's GOP "YouTube" debate in St. Petersburg, Fla., guaranteeing that the historical significance of the event, if there is any, will be somewhat lessened.
"In Elderly Women, Clinton Sees an Electoral Edge" (Patrick Healy, New York Times) For women born before 1920 -- when the 19th Amendment was ratified -- there certainly is a good deal of historical significance behind Hillary Clinton's candidacy.
"Oprah to Campaign With Obama" (John McCormick and Mike Dorning, Chicago Tribune) Oprah could probably make Obama's book a bestseller with a wink of the eye, but can the magic work on the trail? Also, "Obama to Clinton: You're No Albright" (Mike Dorning, Tribune) Obama gave Hillary a little bit of the Lloyd Bentsen treatment yesterday.
"GOP Comeback Climb Is Increasingly Steep" (Chris Cillizza, Washington Post) Take a step away from presidential politics and read up on the uphill climb the GOP has in taking back Congress.
"McCain Sees Progress, Problems in Iraq" (Jim Kuhnhenn, Associated Press) Just back from a Thanksgiving trip to Iraq, John McCain has some thoughts (and don't you just love that headline?)
"Edwards promises he won't get along" (Chelsea Conaboy, Concord Monitor) John Edwards has kicked off a fresh tour, the "America Belongs To Us" tour, aimed at attacking corporations and Washington politics.
"Focusing on Who Can Vote in Iowa, N.H." (Mike Glover, Associated Press) It's always good to have a refresher course on just what the heck a caucus is.
"Biden and Dodd Face Long Odds Together" (Lisa Rossi and Abby Simons, Des Moines Register) There's something touching about these two long-shot candidates (take a look at the accompanying photo), almost as if they could sing "I Got You, Babe" together.
"Ron Paul Supporter Hopes Lightning Will Strike Twice" (Kenneth Vogel, The Politico) Ron Paul's campaign set a goal to raise $12 million in the fourth quarter -- not all that surprising considering the success Paul has had with fundraising. To help the effort, Paul's "e-bundler" is trying to get $2.5 million by the end of the week.
